If your finding yourself asking what the heck is a Chaffle, its basically a Keto Waffle. Its called a chaffle because one of the primary ingredients is shredded cheese, hence CHaffle instead of Waffle. Its a cheese waffle folks, what can be any better!
How it all Started!
I started playing around with Chaffles recently after stumbling across them on the internet. I can’t get enough, I love this idea! Chaffle’s are everywhere! I recently read Chaffels were originally created and shared on a youtube channel by Cat “Keto” Doss. You can view the video here!
Cat “Keto” Boss does her a bit differently than the recipe I have here. But, since Chaffel’s have hit the internet the variations are endless! The video shows the use of a mini waffle maker. I have added it to my amazon cart today, find it here for less than $10! Any waffle maker will work, but this mini one is the perfect size for sandwich breads or a quick treat!
For Basic Keto Chaffles you are going to premix your ingredients. My version of Basic Keto Chaffels includes a tbsp of almond flour and some baking powder. In a bowl combine your egg, mozzarella cheese, almond flour, water and baking powder and with a fork combine. I like to whip it up a bit! When adding your mix to the waffle maker do not overfill, because it will find its way out while it is cooking. I speak from experience! My rule of thumb is add enough batter to cover about ½ to ¾ of the cooking surface. It will spread out while cooking.
Tips and Tricks….
If you want a crispier waffle, you can hold back some of your cheese (or add more!) Place the cheese on the bottom of the waffle maker and the top of the waffle batter before closing the lid. This will allow for additional crunch.
Do not overfill your waffle maker, start with covering ½ the base, and up to ¾ of the base. This batter spreads a bit while cooking. Overfilling is a sure way to make a mess! Every waffle maker is a bit different so start with ½.
If your looking for a sweeter waffle, feel free to use your favorite Keto/Low Carb approved sweetener to the mix! Try some cinnamon on nutmeg, just about any spice can be used to make these Basic Keto Chaffles your own!
Quick and easy, Basic Keto Chaffels should be on your to do list, right away! Let me know if you got creative, I personally want to try to sandwich them with Keto Ice-cream this summer! Try these, you won’t be sorry! – The Scrambled Eggs!
